On this 6-day Winter in Dolomites photography workshop, we refuse to just look at the mountains from the valley floor. We take you straight to the summits. By staying in authentic mountain huts (rifugios) located right on the peaks, we eliminate the commute and the crowds. You wake up, step out the door, and you are already standing at the world’s best viewpoints.

From the stone towers of Cinque Torri to the glaciated majesty of Marmolada, the “Queen of the Dolomites,” this is high-altitude photography made accessible.

Dolomites Photography Workshop Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & The Approach

We meet at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and immediately head north. As the flat plains give way to the towering limestone walls of the Dolomites, the adventure begins. We base ourselves in the Cortina d’Ampezzo area, aiming to catch our first sunset over the peaks before a welcome dinner to discuss our strategy for the week.

Days 2–5: High-Altitude Exploration (Flexible Itinerary)

For the next four days, we immerse ourselves in the high alpine world of the Dolomites. Our schedule is dictated by the light and weather, ensuring we are at the right location at the perfect moment. We base ourselves in authentic mountain huts (rifugios) and high-altitude hotels, using snowcats and cable cars to access the peaks effortlessly.

We will explore the area around Cortina d’Ampezzo, photographing icons such as Cinque Torri right from our doorstep and taking the cable car to high-altitude viewpoints like Lagazuoi for panoramic views across the Alps. We will venture to passes such as Falzarego and Giau, where dramatic rock formations rise from the snow. Moving deeper into the range, we focus on the majestic south face of Marmolada, the “Queen of the Dolomites,” and the vast landscapes characterized by jagged peaks such as Sassolungo. Weather permitting, we aim to reach the dramatic ridgeline of Seceda, capturing its “dagger” peaks slicing through the clouds.

Day 6: The Descent

After one final sunrise shoot and a mountain breakfast, we descend from the high country and transport you back to Venice Airport, arriving with memory cards full of world-class landscape images.

Chasing Light Above the Clouds

In the Dolomites, light is everything. We keep our itinerary flexible to ensure we capture the peaks at their most dramatic. If the valleys are foggy, we stay high. If a snowstorm clears, we race to the ridges to catch the breaking light.

What to Expect Each Day:

• Education: We use downtime and bad weather intervals for image critiques and post-processing sessions, ensuring you leave with not just great photos, but better skills..
• Sunrise: We start in the dark. We aim to be on location for the blue hour and the first light of day.
• Recharge: After the morning shoot, we return for a well-earned breakfast and a few hours of rest.
• Daytime: We utilize the midday hours for travel, scouting, or capturing details in the forests where the light is more forgiving.
• Sunset: We end every day on location, capturing the golden hour and staying until the last color fades from the sky.
• Community: Evenings are for dinner, wine, and connecting with fellow photographers.

Activity level

Easy to Moderate Alpine Access We focus on photography, not mountaineering. We take full advantage of the Dolomites’ world-class infrastructure, using mountain passes, gondolas, and chairlifts to gain elevation effortlessly. While we operate in a high-alpine environment, most shooting locations are just a short walk from our vehicle or the cable car station. You need to be comfortable walking on snow and uneven ground, but we avoid long, strenuous hikes to ensure you have maximum energy for creativity.
