While the crowds flock to the Adriatic coast, the true soul of Montenegro hides in the North. Here, the Durmitor massif rises like a fortress of limestone, and the primeval forests of Biogradska Gora remain untouched by time.

Beyond the Coast: Exploring the Wild Heart of the Balkans
On this 7-day Montenegro photography workshop, we turn our backs on the tourist trail to explore one of Europe’s last true wildernesses. While other European mountain ranges feel increasingly crowded, Northern Montenegro remains largely unexplored by the photography community. You can still find true solitude here—a rarity on the continent—surrounded by dramatic canyons (the deepest in Europe), emerald glacial lakes, and high mountain plateaus where shepherds still live in traditional wooden huts (katuns).
Rugged Peaks. Primeval Forests. Authentic Hospitality.
We don’t just photograph the landscape; we experience the legendary Balkan hospitality. Expect homemade cheese, warm bread, and local wine shared with the people who call these mountains home.
Who is it for?
This Montenegro photography workshop is for photographers who crave the path less traveled—those who prefer raw, untamed landscapes over manicured viewpoints and are excited to jump into a 4×4 to reach remote plateaus that regular buses can’t touch. It is perfect for early risers willing to wake up in the dark to catch the dawn mist at Biogradska Gora, and for travelers who value cultural connection—meeting locals, tasting homemade food, and understanding the rustic way of life in the Balkan mountains.
Montenegro Photography Workshop Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & The Ascent to Durmitor
Your Montenegro photography workshop begins at Podgorica Airport (TGD). We meet here and leave the city heat behind, driving north into the mountains. As the road climbs, the landscape shifts from Mediterranean scrub to high-alpine limestone. We base ourselves in Žabljak, the gateway to Durmitor National Park. We head straight up into the high mountains to capture our first sunset from a dramatic vantage point, watching the last light ignite the limestone peaks before heading down for a hearty welcome dinner.
Days 2-3: The Giants of Durmitor
We spend two full days exploring the dramatic limestone peaks of Durmitor National Park. This is a landscape of extremes. We will drive the Durmitor Ring, a spectacularly scenic road that circles the massif, stopping to photograph jagged ridges and deep valleys. We visit the edge of the Tara River Canyon, the deepest gorge in Europe, where the scale of nature is humbling. We also focus on the human element, photographing the traditional shepherd huts scattered across the high plateaus, often with flocks of sheep moving through the frame against a backdrop of storm clouds or golden light.
Days 4-6: The Primeval Forests of Biogradska Gora
We move east to the Bjelasica mountain range and Biogradska Gora National Park, home to one of the last three primeval rainforests in Europe. The atmosphere here is completely different—softer, greener, and more mysterious. Our priority is Lake Biograd. We arrive early to capture the morning mist dancing on the water, surrounded by ancient maple and beech trees that turn fiery red and orange in autumn. Using 4×4 vehicles, we leave the forest floor to explore the high ridges of Bjelasica. These rolling, grassy mountains offer 360-degree views and a sense of infinite space. We spend our evenings reviewing images and enjoying the slow pace of mountain life.
Day 7: The Final Morning & Departure
We squeeze in one last sunrise shoot—perhaps capturing the texture of the forest or a final mountain vista—before driving back to Podgorica Airport for afternoon flights. You leave with a portfolio that captures the raw, authentic beauty of the Balkans.

Chasing Light & Tradition
In the mountains of Montenegro, weather moves fast. We keep our itinerary fluid to adapt to the conditions. If the peaks of Durmitor are socked in, we might descend to the canyons for dramatic moody shots. If the light is perfect on the high plateaus, we stay until the last moment. We also leave room for spontaneity—if we get invited for coffee by a local shepherd (which happens often!), we stop. These unscripted moments often yield the best portraits.
What to Expect Each Day:
- Sunrise: We start in the dark. We aim to be on location for the blue hour and the first light of day.
- Recharge: After the morning shoot, we return for a well-earned breakfast and a few hours of rest to recharge.
- Daytime: We utilize the midday hours for travel, scouting, or capturing details in the forests where the light is more forgiving.
- Sunset: We end every day on location, capturing the golden hour and staying until the last color fades from the sky.
- Community: Evenings are for dinner, wine, and connecting with fellow photographers.
- Education: We use downtime and bad weather intervals for image critiques and post-processing sessions, ensuring you leave with not just great photos, but better skills..
Activity level
Moderate & Adventurous. While we don’t do technical climbing, this is an active trip. You should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain, wet forest paths, and grassy slopes. We use 4x4s to gain elevation, but getting the best compositions often requires a short hike off the beaten track. A reasonable level of fitness will help you make the most of the wilder locations.
What’s Included in Your Adventure
Everything is Taken Care Of. We believe that a workshop should be stress-free. You focus on the images; we handle the logistics. This tour is fully all-inclusive:

Extend Your Adventure:
Bay of Kotor
After the Mountains of Montenegro workshop, it’s a great idea to spend a few extra nights on the coast, around the Bay of Kotor. You can do this on your own or as part of our organisation, adding a relaxed coastal finale to the trip.
Get in touch if you’d like us to help organise the extension.
Meet Your Guide

Luka Esenko
Montenegro is close to my heart. It feels like the Alps did 50 years ago—wild, unpolished, and incredibly welcoming. Speaking the language opens doors here, literally; we often get invited into homes just because we said hello. That’s the experience I want to share with you.

Dan Briški
I spend my life guiding and climbing in the Julian Alps, but Montenegro creates a different kind of excitement. The limestone here is massive, and the landscape feels truly wild. It’s rare to find this level of solitude in Europe’s mountains. Whether we are shooting the jagged ridges of Durmitor or the primeval forests, the raw energy of this place is incredible.
