Wild Horses. Ottoman Heritage. Brutalist Monuments.
On this 10-day Bosnia & Herzegovina photography tour, we explore the fascinating diversity of this country. We go beyond the famous bridge of Mostar to find the hidden soul of the country. You will photograph the morning mist rising over Sarajevo’s minarets, stand face-to-face with wild horses on Mt. Cincar, and capture the abstract brutalist beauty of the Sutjeska monuments.
This is a journey of contrasts: from the bustling, coffee-scented bazaars of the cities to the silent, primeval forests of the Dinaric Alps.
Who is it for?
This workshop is for the curious photographer who wants variety. One day, you are shooting street photography in a bustling bazaar, the next, you are in a 4×4 chasing wild horses on a windswept plateau. It is perfect if you love mixing genres—landscape, wildlife (horses), architecture, and documentary. If you appreciate history, strong coffee, and exploring a country that feels genuinely undiscovered by mass tourism, this is your trip.
Bosnia & Herzegovina Photography Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Sarajevo
Your Bosnia photography tour begins in Sarajevo, the “Jerusalem of Europe.” After settling into our hotel in the historic center, we hit the streets of Baščaršija, the old Ottoman quarter. The smell of grilled meat and Bosnian coffee fills the air as we capture the golden hour, hitting the copper-smith workshops and the iconic Sebilj Fountain.
Day 2: The Shepherd Village
We start with sunrise over the city, capturing the skyline dotted with minarets and church towers. Then, we escape to the mountains. We drive up Mt. Bjelašnica to Lukomir, the highest and most isolated village in Bosnia. Here, time has stopped. We photograph traditional stone houses, ancient stećci (medieval tombstones), and shepherds living a life unchanged for centuries.
Day 3: Viziers & The Road to the Wild
We travel deeper into Central Bosnia to Travnik, the city of Viziers. We explore its colorful painted mosque and the medieval fortress that guards the valley. In the afternoon, we head west towards Livno, the gateway to the wild.
Day 4: The Wild Horses of Mt. Cincar
This is a highlight for many. We jump into 4×4 vehicles to ascend the rugged Mt. Cincar. Here, hundreds of wild horses roam free across the vast, barren plateau. We spend the day tracking the herds, photographing majestic stallions and playful foals against a backdrop of dramatic limestone peaks. It is a safari experience in the heart of Europe.
Day 5: Mostar & The Old Bridge
We descend to the Mediterranean south, arriving in Mostar. The highlight here is the world-famous Old Bridge (Stari Most). We prioritize shooting at twilight to capture the bridge beautifully illuminated against the dusk sky, avoiding the midday crowds and focusing on the elegance of the Ottoman architecture.
Day 6: Dervish Monasteries & Stone Villages
We start with a sunrise shoot in Mostar before exploring the surrounding gems. We visit the Dervish monastery at Blagaj, built right into a sheer cliff face at the source of the Buna River. Later, we explore the stone village of Počitelj, a UNESCO candidate that clings to the hillside like an amphitheater, offering endless compositions of its fortress and mosque.
Day 7: Sutjeska Monument
We leave civilization behind for Sutjeska National Park, home to the highest peaks in the country. Our focus today is the dramatic Tjentište War Memorial. This massive, abstract brutalist sculpture commands the valley and offers a stark, powerful subject against the natural landscape.
Day 8: High Peaks & Mountain Eyes
We spend the day exploring the wilder side of Sutjeska. We ascend towards the rugged Maglić massif for breathtaking views that glimpse deep into neighboring Montenegro. Our adventure continues in the Zelengora range, where we hike to the pristine “mountain eyes”—glacial lakes that offer perfect reflections of the surrounding Dinaric Alps.
Day 9: Return to Sarajevo
We make our way back to the capital through the dramatic canyons of the Neretva river. We spend our final evening enjoying a farewell dinner, celebrating a journey that has taken us from wild horses to war monuments.
Day 10: Departure
After a final breakfast, we transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
Activity level
Moderate & Rewarding. This tour involves a mix of city walking and nature hikes. In the cities (Sarajevo, Mostar), we walk on cobblestones and uneven pavement. In the mountains (Lukomir, Sutjeska), we do moderate hikes on grassy or rocky terrain to reach viewpoints. The wild horse safari involves 4×4 travel but minimal strenuous hiking. You should be comfortable walking 3–5km a day on varied terrain.
