Montenegro… Such a poetic name for this tiny country! Most people tend to visit the coast, which is beautiful and full of historical treasures, and only a few will go on to explore Montenegro’s true showpiece – the wild mountains of the North. This Montenegro photography workshop focuses on two breathtaking national parks.
First the rugged and dramatic Durmitor National Park with its majestic limestone peaks. We’ll travel the mountain roads taking in the amazing views of the highest peaks in the area. We’ll visit mountain villages where people still farm using traditional methods and where true hospitality is experienced in the home. Some of the deepest canyons of Europe can be found here as well as pristine glacial lakes and forests.
Next, we move on to Biogradska Gora nestled within the Bjelasica mountain range. This national park is home to some of the most beautiful forests of Europe as well as the unbelievably green Lake Biograd surrounded by wild mountains and nature. Here the focus will be on nature photography and smaller scenes as well as mountain views.

DIFFICULTY
This trip is for photographers who enjoy the outdoors, like to be at one with nature and don’t mind early starts to catch the best morning light. We will spend a lot of time walking and whilst these are not strenuous hikes or climbs, a good level of basic fitness and ability to walk off the beaten track is required.
In addition to the mountain views and spectacular nature, what makes this trip even more special are the local people that you’ll meet along the way and the genuine Montenegrin hospitality and tasty home cooked food that you’ll experience – and of course the odd bottle of renowned red Vranac wine that we’ll share!
Luka has visited Montenegro numerous times, speaks the local language fluently and has climbed some of its highest peaks.
Mountains of Montenegro Photography Workshop ITINERARY
Arrive in Montenegro
Arrive at Podgorica Airport and transfer to Durmitor National Park, where our Montenegro photography workshop begins. After settling in, we’ll head out for an evening shoot to capture the stunning mountain landscapes bathed in golden hour light. The day concludes with a warm welcome dinner, giving us the opportunity to discuss the exciting days ahead.
Durmitor National Park
We’ll dedicate two full days to exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Durmitor National Park and its surroundings. Highlights include photographing the iconic Black Lake, a serene alpine gem nestled among the mountains, as well as discovering some of the park’s hidden mountain lakes.
Traveling along the scenic mountain roads, we’ll stop frequently to capture awe-inspiring panoramas, often sharing the road with flocks of sheep or herds of cows. Weather permitting, we’ll venture to dramatic viewpoints overlooking the Tara River Canyon—Europe’s deepest gorge and the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon. The combination of rugged peaks, lush forests, and sweeping vistas will provide endless creative inspiration.
Biogradska Gora National Park
We’ll spend two full days exploring the enchanting landscapes of Biogradska Gora National Park and its surroundings. This park is home to Biogradsko Lake, a serene body of water surrounded by ancient virgin forests, offering endless photographic opportunities. Mornings here are particularly magical, with mist often hovering over the lake, creating an ethereal atmosphere.
Using 4×4 vehicles, we’ll venture into remote mountain areas that few tourists ever see. These off-the-beaten-path locations reveal Montenegro’s untamed beauty, from sweeping alpine meadows to rugged peaks that seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon. The remote mountain plateaus provide panoramic views and a sense of solitude, making them ideal for both wide-angle landscapes and intimate nature shots.
Over these two days, we’ll take our time to capture the region’s diversity—from the still reflections of Biogradsko Lake to the raw, dramatic scenery of the highlands. This extended stay ensures we have the flexibility to adapt to the weather and light, maximizing our opportunities for stunning shots.
Departure from Montenegro
On our final day, we’ll make the most of the morning light with a short photography session before transferring back to Podgorica for departures. This is a chance to capture any final scenes and reflect on the incredible memories and images we’ve created during the workshop.
We’ll keep our itinerary as flexible as possible to make the best of the weather and light conditions each day, but you can expect the following:
- A daily sunrise/morning session on location
- Return home for a breakfast and some rest
- Day session on location
- A packed lunch or a stop en route and some free time to explore on your own
- A daily dusk/sunset session on location
- Dinner and time to unwind/socialize
- Image review/critique sessions will be included in a flexible manner as time allows (during bad weather, for example, we may spend more time indoors reviewing photos and discussing techniques, composition, and post-processing)
Included
Accommodation (6 nights) double/twin rooms sharing (singles available upon request), all meals, airport transfers and all transportation during the tour in air-conditioned luxury minivans (including AWD vehicles in Durmitor NP), expert guiding, photography tuition, entrance fees, boat fares and all local taxes.
OPTIONAL EXTENSION
Luka will travel on from Montenegro to scout Sutjeska National Park in neighbouring Bosnia-Herzegovina. This national park features some of the most amazing views of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s highest peaks and deepest valleys, as well as the oldest virgin forest in Europe, pristine mountain lakes and a fascinating monument commemorating a WWII battle on the Sutjeska River. Most visitors to Sutjeska tend to gather along the river for whitewater rafting making it easy for us to photograph this park’s natural beauty in near solitude – you’ll certainly feel like early explorers!
