Montenegro Photography workshop

Mountains of Montenegro Photography Workshop

Montenegro… Such a poetic name for this tiny country! Most people tend to visit the coast, which is beautiful and full of historical treasures, and only a few will go on to explore Montenegro’s true showpiece – the wild mountains of the North. This Montenegro photography workshop focuses on two breathtaking national parks.

MONTENEGRIN LANDSCAPES AND NATURAL WONDERS

First the rugged and dramatic Durmitor National Park with its majestic limestone peaks. We’ll travel the mountain roads taking in the amazing views of the highest peaks in the area. We’ll visit mountain villages where people still farm using traditional methods and where true hospitality is experienced in the home. Some of the deepest canyons of Europe can be found here as well as pristine glacial lakes and forests.

Next, we move on to Biogradska Gora nestled within the Bjelasica mountain range. This national park is home to some of the most beautiful forests of Europe as well as the unbelievably green Lake Biograd surrounded by wild mountains and nature. Here the focus will be on nature photography and smaller scenes as well as mountain views.

DIFFICULTY

This trip is for photographers who enjoy the outdoors, like to be at one with nature and don’t mind early starts to catch the best morning light. We will spend a lot of time walking and whilst these are not strenuous hikes or climbs, a good level of basic fitness and ability to walk off the beaten track is required.

In addition to the mountain views and spectacular nature, what makes this trip even more special are the local people that you’ll meet along the way and the genuine Montenegrin hospitality and tasty home cooked food that you’ll experience – and of course the odd bottle of renowned red Vranac wine that we’ll share!

Luka has visited Montenegro numerous times, speaks the local language fluently and has climbed some of its highest peaks.

Mountains of Montenegro Photography Workshop ITINERARY

Arrive in Montenegro

Arrival at Podgorica airport and transfer to Durmitor National Park. We start our Montenegro photography workshop with an evening shoot capturing mountain views followed by a welcome dinner.

Durmitor National Park

We’ll have two full days to explore Durmitor National Park and its surrounding area. We’ll visit the Black Lake, one of the major sights of the park, as well as some of the more hidden mountain lakes. Taking our time along the scenic mountain road (where sheep and cows might be the only traffic jams we’ll encounter!) we’ll stop to take in amazing mountain views. Weather permitting we’ll also visit some viewpoints above Tara river canyon; the largest canyon in Europe and second only to the Colorado canyon in the world.

Biogradska Gora National Park

Heading east we move onto another natural gem – Biogradska Gora National Park. This is a much smaller and more intimate place, known for its beautiful lake and dense virgin forests. If the weather is on our side we’ll also visit a nearby mountain plateau for more spectacular mountain views.

Departure from Montenegro

Depending on individual departure times, we’ll fit in a final morning shoot before leaving for Podgorica to catch our flights home.

We’ll keep our itinerary as flexible as possible to make the best of the weather and light conditions each day, but you can expect the following:

  • A daily sunrise/morning session on location
  • Return home for a breakfast and some rest
  • Day session on location
  • A packed lunch or a stop en route and some free time to explore on your own
  • A daily dusk/sunset session on location
  • Dinner and time to unwind/socialize
  • Image review/critique sessions will be included in a flexible manner as time allows (during bad weather, for example, we may spend more time indoors reviewing photos and discussing techniques, composition, and post-processing)

Included

Accommodation (5 nights) double/twin rooms sharing (singles available upon request), all meals, airport transfers and all transportation during the tour in air-conditioned luxury minivans (including AWD vehicles in Durmitor NP), expert guiding, photography tuition, entrance fees, boat fares and all local taxes.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION

Luka will travel on from Montenegro to scout Sutjeska National Park in neighbouring Bosnia-Herzegovina. This national park features some of the most amazing views of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s highest peaks and deepest valleys, as well as the oldest virgin forest in Europe, pristine mountain lakes and a fascinating monument commemorating a WWII battle on the Sutjeska River. Most visitors to Sutjeska tend to gather along the river for whitewater rafting making it easy for us to photograph this park’s natural beauty in near solitude – you’ll certainly feel like early explorers!
