On this 8-day Bulgaria photography workshop, we journey into the heart of the Balkans to capture a way of life that is disappearing elsewhere in Europe. We explore the timeless stone villages of the Rhodopes, where shepherds still tend their flocks on the open ridges. We travel south to the dramatic sand pyramids of Melnik, a landscape so unique it feels like a movie set.
This is a trip for the senses: the scent of pine and roasted peppers, the sound of sheep bells in the fog, and the taste of the region’s famous red wines.

This workshop is designed for photographers who want variety. It is perfect if you love atmospheric landscapes (layers of ridges, fog, autumn colors) but also want to engage in environmental portraiture. If you enjoy slow travel—spending time in villages, meeting locals, and waiting for the light rather than rushing from spot to spot—you will love the rhythm of this trip.
Bulgaria Photography Workshop Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & The Mountain Escape
Your Bulgaria photography workshop begins in Sofia. We meet at the airport (or your hotel) and immediately head south into the Western Rhodope Mountains. As we climb, the city noise fades, replaced by endless pine forests. We arrive at our mountain lodge base just in time for a sunset session, capturing the last light hitting the rolling ridges before a hearty welcome dinner.
Days 2-3: The Mystical Rhodopes
We spend two full days immersed in the rhythm of the mountains. Mornings are for the landscapes: we wake up early to catch the “layers” shot—mist floating in the valleys with ridges receding into the distance. During the day, we focus on culture. We visit small, stone-built villages to photograph the daily life of the highlanders. With Dancho as our local guide, we have access to people’s homes and workshops. You’ll photograph shepherds, artisans, and farmers, capturing portraits that tell the story of this resilient region.
Day 4: Culinary Traditions & The Road to Melnik
We leave the green mountains for the arid south. En route, we stop at a traditional guesthouse for a hands-on cooking class. This isn’t just lunch; it’s a photo opportunity to capture the textures of Balkan cuisine—dough, peppers, cheese, and fire. In the late afternoon, we arrive in Melnik, Bulgaria’s smallest town, and capture our first sunset over the golden sand pyramids.
Days 5-6: Sand Pyramids & Wine Cellars
The landscape here is dramatic. We are surrounded by towering sandstone pyramids that glow red at sunrise and sunset. We spend our sessions finding compositions in this chaotic, beautiful geology. Melnik is also famous for wine. We visit a local cellar, photographing the barrels and the winemaker (and tasting the unique Shiroka Melnishka grape). We also explore the Rozhen Monastery, capturing the interplay of Orthodox architecture and the wild landscape.
Day 7: The Rila Masterpiece & Sofia
We drive north to the Rila Monastery, the crown jewel of Bulgarian heritage. Nestled in a deep valley, its colorful striped arches and frescoes offer endless architectural compositions. It is a UNESCO site for a reason. In the late afternoon, we arrive back in Sofia to shoot the golden hour at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, capturing its massive gold domes against the blue hour sky. We finish with a farewell dinner in the capital.
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, we transfer you to Sofia Airport (SOF) for your flight home, with memory cards full of autumn gold.
Activity level
Easy to Moderate This workshop is accessible to most fitness levels. In the Rhodopes, we walk on grassy slopes and village paths. In Melnik, the trails to the viewpoints can be sandy and uneven with some short uphill sections, but we take them at a slow, photographic pace. You should be comfortable walking 2–4km a day.
