Meteora and Zagoria: Rooftop monasteries and ancient bridges in autumn colors
This 7-day adventure will take us to the breath-taking panoramic landscape of Meteora and traditional Greek mountainous villages with stone houses and ancient bridges.
Meteora is a unique area in Central Greece known for its dramatic rock formations with monasteries built on top. Meaning "elevated", Meteora offers absolutely breathtaking panoramic views, details, shadows, and patterns: a dream to every photographer wishing to capture the variety of light conditions. Roadside stops and short walks will allow us to reach vantage points with views towards the monasteries.
Traditional villages of Zagoria and Vikos gorge
The region of Zagoria situated about 3 hours west of Meteora is known for its superb natural beauty with two national parks and the famous Vikos gorge. According to Guinness records, it is the deepest in the World according to its width. The gorge is 20 km long and its depth ranges between 100 to 500 m and 400 m wide. Sitting on the edge of the gorge will offer us truly breath-taking views.
Stone is the main construction material here and we will see a number of very photogenic arched stone bridges built mainly in the XVIII-XIX century. Traditional houses are all made of stone and their roofs are covered with slate plates. The atmosphere in traditional Greek villages is not to be missed with their taverns, homemade food, and small squares with plane trees reflecting the feel of the Mediterranean region.

Drive to Meteora
After breakfast, we transfer to Meteora for 2 nights (3 hours) aiming to arrive for lunch in the traditional village of Kastraki. After lunch, we will immediately start our journey around the monasteries. Positioned on the top of sandstone cliffs, monasteries are often backdropped by sheer cliffs. When looking over a valley, monasteries are a fantastic eye-catching detail that can be used for scale and attracting viewer's attention in the image. For sunset we will be at one of the most famous view points in the area overlooking Roussanou monastery with breath taking view over the whole area of Meteora. We will spend the following two nights in the village of Kalambaka.
Meteora rock monasteries
We start our full day around Meteora with sunrise at the cliffs with a visit to one of the biggest monasteries in the area. Climbing up some stairs will give us elevated views over the valley which is often filled with mist isolating the pinnacles with monasteries. Those who want can stay by the road and still look over the valley. Later in the day we will drive around the monasteries and photograph details, backlight monasteries and play with the shadows amongst the cliffs. Fens of leading lines, patterns and framing will be in their paradise here as there are numerous rocks and shadows that can be used to lead
the viewer’s attention to a selected point of interest. For sunset, we shall be back at the panoramic views relying on the dynamic sky. The keenest can do night time photography with a Milky way or still shoot misty clouds amongst the cliffs.
Today will be our last day at Meteora and to make most of it, we will be back at the cliffs and monasteries for sunrise which will give us another chance to photograph the Meteora. After breakfast, we head towards Zagori region with a stop at Ioannina lake and its beautiful mosque en route. In the afternoon we will
arrive to the village of Monodendri where we stay for 2 next nights.
